You may have been aware that this week was, and technically still is, Golden Week here in Japan, but did you know that it’s Condom Day today?
And the frisky business doesn’t end there. It may be pure coincidence, but there are various anniversaries in May that happen to be related to love relationships in one way or another, although some of these special days appear to be slightly odd – apparently you could risk losing your life if you had sex on one of these days! Read on to find out when!
In Japan, there’s some sort of anniversary for some cause almost every day. This is so because Japan has an association that keeps track of all these dates as an official matter, the Japan Anniversary Association. For a fee of 100,000 yen (US$835), anyone can register their very own special day and have it officially recognized by the association.
That being said, not everyone wants to fork out that sum of money to register an anniversary. In many cases, the dates are registered by companies and organizations for marketing purposes. Apart from these officially recognized anniversaries, the Japanese observe many other “unofficial” anniversaries for various reasons, but mostly because they’re a punny bunch and enjoy a bit of wordplay on these dates. Besides, life could be more interesting with something to look forward to every day!
– May 6th – Condom Day (Gomu no Hi)
In Japanese, the numbers “5” and “6” can be pronounced as “go” and “mu” respectively, resulting in “gomu” when read together. Gomu may refer to rubber, latex, or a slang term for condoms, but obviously more people would rather celebrate the latter. And it seems like one of they ways they observe this anniversary is by posting photos of themselves posing with condoms…

More specifically, this anniversary is a day for men to declare their true feelings to the women they love.

This day is approximately three months from Valentine’s Day, and it’s said to be the best time to bring up the topic of breaking up if the relationship you got into as a result of Valentine’s Day doesn’t seem to be working out. Japan tends to experience sudden storms and strong winds between late-April to mid-May due to extratropical cyclones. As they always say, after every storm comes a rainbow, so just treat your breakups like a passing storm and look forward to the next rainbow!

It is said that on this day in 1940, the world’s first-ever nylon stockings created by the American nylon manufacturing company Du Pont were made available to the public. We have no idea why the Japanese are bothered about when the US got their first nylon stockings, but since stockings are a fashion staple for most Japanese OL (office lady), perhaps it’s only fair to pay a tribute to the original creators. The date was chosen by Japanese film company Shochiku in conjunction with the release of the movie titled Love Letter in 1998. Other than it being the day the movie hit the big screens in Japan, the numbers “5” (ko), “2” (fu) and “3” (mi) sound similar to the word “koibumi”, which means “love letter” in Japanese.
May seems to be a busy month for romance seekers! Keep your hearts intact and remember to abstain from intercourse on May 16 if you wish to live for the next three years. Well, if you believe in the words of the Edo era people, that is!
